In terms of efficiency and energy transfer, study these things that are working during the connected lag:
The lead arm works up helping the bat move from a vertical plane to the shoulder plane
The bottom hand also flattens to facilitate this vertical to shoulder plane adjustment
Rear elbow draws back to get the hands closer the rear shoulder AND flow the barrel back (Bonds does this as well)
Rear elbow works down getting rear forearm into a good "transfer" position that matches spine angle
